Responsible Gambling

Playing should stay fun. This page covers how to keep it that way, the signs that it's starting to slip and where people in Canada can get free, confidential help.

Treat it like a ticket, not a paycheque

When you buy seats for a Leafs or Canucks game, you don’t expect the money back. You pay for three periods of entertainment, and if your team wins, that’s a nice extra. We think gaming deserves the same attitude. Pick an amount before you start that you’d be fine spending on a night out, and once it’s gone, the night’s over.

Where it goes wrong is when gambling turns into a plan for rent money, or a way to undo yesterday’s losses. At that point it has stopped being entertainment.

Quick rounds, quick decisions

The game this site covers moves fast. A tower can go up and come crashing down in the time it takes to sip your coffee, and the next round is one tap away. We love that pace, but we’ve also noticed how easily it swallows an hour.

What works for us is boring but effective. Note the time when you start. Look at your balance on purpose every so often instead of only when it hits zero. And after a painful loss, get up, walk around, make a sandwich. The urge to win it straight back is strongest in those first few minutes, and it’s also when people make their worst calls.

How to tell it’s slipping

Nobody wakes up one day with a gambling problem. It usually starts small. Maybe a session that was meant to last twenty minutes runs past midnight. Maybe you top up right after losing, just to get back to even, and then do it again. Some people notice they’ve stopped mentioning their gaming to their partner.

Other signs are harder to miss. Money for groceries or savings ends up in a casino account, or you borrow to keep playing. You feel edgy on days you can’t play. If any of that sounds familiar, it’s worth taking seriously, and talking to someone about it, a friend or one of the services below, is a good first move.

Brakes you can put on

Most casinos have settings for deposit limits, short breaks and longer self-exclusion. They’re tucked into your account menu, and honestly the best time to switch them on is when you’re calm and not mid-session.

Provincial self-exclusion programs are another option, with one catch. They only apply to sites regulated in your own province, so a casino based abroad won’t block you because of them. For something broader, tools like Gamban or BetBlocker lock gambling sites out of your phone and laptop. Plenty of Canadian banks will also stop card payments to gambling merchants if you call and ask.

Who to call in Canada

In Quebec, Jeu : aide et référence takes calls about gambling. British Columbia has Gambling Support BC, free for anyone in the province. Alberta runs its own Addiction and Mental Health Helpline at 1-866-332-2322, open 24/7 and covering gambling along with other addiction concerns. Manitoba’s AFM Problem Gambling Helpline, 1-800-463-1554, is also 24 hours and offers interpretation in over 150 languages.

Elsewhere in Canada, your provincial health line or family doctor can tell you what’s out there near you.

Asking for help doesn’t have to wait until things are bad. These services are free, and they keep what you tell them private.

Elsewhere in Canada, your provincial health line or family doctor can tell you what’s out there near you. If someone is in immediate danger, call emergency services.

When it’s someone close to you

Sometimes it isn’t your own play that worries you, but a partner’s or a parent’s. That’s a lonely spot to be in. Gam-Anon was set up for people in exactly that position, and the helplines above will talk to family members just as readily as to players.

Under-age players

This site is for adults. You have to be 19 to gamble in most of Canada, or 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. If teenagers share your phone or laptop, log out of casino accounts, don’t let the browser save your password and switch on parental controls that filter gambling sites.

Gambling is for adults only, aged 19 and over, or 18 and over in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. Please play responsibly.
